Introduction:
United States Steel Corporation has announced a $1.9 billion investment to build a new direct reduced iron (DRI) facility at Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Arkansas. The plant will be the first of its kind in the United States.
Features:
The investment supports U. S. Steel’s next-generation steelmaking strategy and strengthens its position in modern and efficient production. The new facility will build on the company’s earlier investment in 2022 to produce direct reduced-grade pellets at its Keetac plant in Minnesota. This creates a direct link between mining, feedstock production for electric arc furnaces (EAF), and steel manufacturing at Big River Steel Works.
Locating the DRI facility at Big River Steel Works, where the Big River 2 expansion is already operational and four EAFs are in use, removes the need to transport DRI from other locations. This improves efficiency and provides a more secure and cost-effective supply of raw materials.
The project also supports stronger integration across the company’s operations, helping improve efficiency, product quality, and supply reliability. The collaboration with Nippon Steel has helped accelerate the timeline for this investment.
The development is expected to support around 200 full-time roles at Big River Steel Works, along with 35 contractor positions. At peak construction, the project could create about 2,000 jobs, contributing to regional economic growth.
